Question: What is the National Provider Identifier (NPI)?
Answer: The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a government issued 10-digit ID for all healthcare providers who bill for services. The NPI is one of several changes rolled out to support the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Administrative Simplification Standard. You can find a list of NPI Numbers in the NPI Registry.
As of May 2008, NPI numbers must be used in lieu of legacy provider identifiers on medical claims in order to ensure remittance.
