The National Provider Identifier or NPI is a unique identification number assigned to individual healthcare providers, healthcare groups and organizations that provide medical or related-health services as well as organizations that supply products and services to the healthcare industry. The primary use of the NPI is to have a common identifier across health plans and healthcare clearinghouses for administrative and financial transactions specified by HIPAA.
